At approximately 4:15 PM on 8-17-2022 a three-vehicle crash occurred near the intersection of Highway and and 832 Road between Madison and Norfolk

An SUV, driven by Julio Cesar Hernandez (age 37 of Madison) had stalled and was parked diagonally along Highway 81 in the northbound lane. A second vehicle stopped to offer assistance and a passenger, Roger Beard, (age 61 of Norfolk), exited vehicle number two to offer assistance.

As Beard was standing near Hernandez’s vehicle and third vehicle, driven by Jose Lombana (age 24 of Norfolk) struck the right rear corner of the Hernandez’s vehicle which then impacted Beard.

Hernandez’s vehicle rolled over pinning Hernandez. Passers-by stopped and rendered aid rolling the Hernandez vehicle back onto its wheels.

Beard was propelled several feet and was killed instantly.

Hernandez was transported via Norfolk Fire and Rescue to Faith Regional Health Services. Lombana was transported via LifeNet to a hospital in Sioux City.

The Nebraska State Patrol is handling the accident investigation and reconstruction.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation. Also providing assistance were Madison PD, and Madison Fire and Rescue.

Next of kin have been notified.
