The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous phone calls regarding scammers informing individuals they have an active federal warrant. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Government will not contact anyone by phone regarding a warrant, nor will they request payment or information via phone call. During these calls, con artists attempt to collect a fine in lieu of arrest for failing to report for jury duty or other offenses. Potential victims are given options for satisfying payment to include purchasing a prepaid debit card or gift card and reading the account number over the phone or face certain arrest. Scammers use many tactics to sound credible. They sometimes provide information like badge numbers, names of actual law enforcement officials and federal judges, and courthouse addresses.
