On May 14th, 2025, at approximately 4:00 PM the Madison County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the intersection of Highway 81 and Highway 32 near Madison, Nebraska. Upon arrival, Madison County deputies diverted southbound traffic due to one of the vehicles involved blocking both lanes of southbound travel on Highway 81. A black Jeep Gladiator, driven by James Hitz, had struck the back of a semi-trailer. Hitz was transported to Faith Regional Hospital by ambulance. The driver of the semi, Jeff Kelley, was released from the scene after being checked over by EMS personnel. Preliminary investigation has determined Hitz swerved to avoid hitting the semi and clipped the back left side of the trailer. This caused the Jeep Gladiator to overturn. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Madison Police Department, Madison Fire and Rescue, and D&L Towing. |

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous phone calls regarding scammers informing individuals they have an active federal warrant. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Government will not contact anyone by phone regarding a warrant, nor will they request payment or information via phone call. During these calls, con artists attempt to collect a fine in lieu of arrest for failing to report for jury duty or other offenses. Potential victims are given options for satisfying payment to include purchasing a prepaid debit card or gift card and reading the account number over the phone or face certain arrest. Scammers use many tactics to sound credible. They sometimes provide information like badge numbers, names of actual law enforcement officials and federal judges, and courthouse addresses. Madison County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 35 and E. Benjamin Avenue. Three individuals were transported to Faith Regional Hospital for their injuries. One with life-threatening injuries. Madison County was assisted in the investigation by Stanton County deputies, Stanton County Emergency Management, Norfolk Police, Norfolk Rescue, and Woodland Park fire.
