Employment Opportunity – Deputy Sheriff (closes 5-26-2026)

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is presently taking applications to establish an eligibility list for the position of Deputy Sheriff, which currently two positions exist. One in Patrol/Criminal Division and one for the Jail Division. These are for Certified Deputy positions, but Nebraska Law Enforcement Certification is not required.

Job Description

A Deputy with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office will perform all related duties of the Jail/Court division or Patrol Division. Which includes; patrolling Madison County’s rural and municipal areas to prevent and discover the commission of crimes; enforce State laws; enforce traffic regulations; conduct investigations on criminal offenses and traffic accidents to gather evidence, obtain witnesses and make arrests; serve subpoenas, writs, executions and other civil documents; provide documentation and testimony to courts. Care and custody of inmates within the jail facility; Perform prisoner transports and extraditions.

Minimum Required Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent. Ability to meet, communicate, and work with general public effectively and to react calmly, quickly, and accurately in emergencies is essential. Must successfully pass literacy, physical, background, and psychological exams, as well as a Basic Training Academy as provided or approved by Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center. Minimum age 21 years. Certified law enforcement officers; only those whose certificate is in good standing will be considered. Out of state certifications must meet the NLETC standards for certification.

Hiring Process

Candidates: Following a review of all applications, qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the hiring process. Written and physical tests will be utilized to evaluate the qualifications and fitness levels of those selected, to be able to enter the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center. Applicants must achieve a passing score on all examination components, complete background paperwork, and have a successful Merit Commission interview in order to be placed on the eligibility list. The eligibility list is valid for up to six (6) months. Those on the eligibility list will be considered for employment.

Salary and Benefits

Starting probationary salary $57,391.00 per year with graduated increases for seven years, to $85,024.00.

Posted salary negotiable based on certification, experience, and qualifications for any lateral transfers.

Career Opportunity – Corrections Officer (2026 – 1)

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is presently taking applications for the position of Corrections Officer (Jailer) for which we currently have open positions.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office provides an excellent opportunity for a career in corrections and law enforcement. Beginning a career in corrections or law enforcement? The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is a great place to start. The Sheriff’s Office provides ample training and certifications necessary to work as a correctional officer in Nebraska. A structured training program is in place to ensure that new employees can excel in a corrections environment.

All full-time employees working 40 hours or more per week are eligible for health insurance benefits upon completion of 60 days employment with the County.

In addition to health insurance, Madison County offers a wide variety of insurance options. These options include Dental, Vision, Long-Term Disability, Hospital Indemnity, Critical Illness and Accident Insurance, additional retirement, and Life Insurance. Madison County also offers supplemental insurance plans through Aflac and Colonial. These are at employee cost.

We offer competitive salary with graduated merit increases and regular cost of living increase. Qualifications include 1. Minimum age of 19 years at time of hiring. 2. Physical requirements include weight proportioned to height; vision 20/100 uncorrected, corrected to 20/20; normal depth perception; no color blindness; hearing must be normal in frequencies of normal voice range. 3. High School graduate or have completed an equivalent course of education. 4. Must not have been convicted of a felony or convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude and must not have demonstrated a disregard of the law to such an extent that usefulness as a Corrections Officer would be impaired. 5. Possession of a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.

Correction Officers work 12 hours shifts with every other weekend off.

Salary is $49,437.60 to $70,043.20. Negotiable with experience.

Job Description

Warrants and Extradition Clerk

Maintain accurate filing system and have workable knowledge of computers and perform high quality data entry. Coordinate transportation of inmates from one facility to another and work with agencies throughout the United States. Manage incoming calls and a sharp eye for detail. Must be able to complete and retain all necessary training and certification in teletype, protection orders, vehicle inspection and security awareness.

We are looking for someone experienced in an office setting with proficiency in Microsoft office (word, excel). Strong punctual habits, excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must maintain a good working relationship with employees and deal firmly and courteously with the public.

Starting probationary salary $46,468.00 per year with graduated increases for three years, to $48,904.00.
